A romantic date spot by night, the weekend brunch scene at Freek’s Mill in Gowanus is a decidedly family friendly affair. While the big draw of the place is its large, wood-burning oven, they give it a rest for brunch, falling back on cooking beautifully executed dishes that are a cut above your normal brunch fare.
What to eat? If you want to go lite, try the gem lettuce or rutabaga toast, or for a heartier meal, enjoy the shakshuka or duck confit scramble. And if you are truly feeling decadent, dig into the chicken fried steak that is nothing like the diner variety one normally shies away from.
Pipsqueak tip For the less adventurous eaters, there are of course the brunch classics like eggs and french toast. Afterwards if your pipsqueak has been good, treat yourselves to an ice cream down the street at Ample Hills Creamery.
