This neighbourhood pub still retains its local boozer credentials, but most locals flock here with their eyes firmly on the menu. The handsome building is set back from the hustle of Islington’s Upper Street, and from its kitchen comes straight-up fiercely seasonal cooking. If the Scotch egg is on the menu, snap one up – the Drapers Arms won the hotly contested Scotch Egg Challenge 2017 with their haggis version.
What to eat? From the bar snacks menu, go for the cauliflower cheese croquettes or a pint of prawns. On the menu proper, which changes daily, pigeon breast on dripping toast with watercress is a seductive opening gambit, and the mains hold nothing back, bringing thrifty cuts of meat out of the shade in an oxtail pie, featherblade steak, faggots, or lamb rump dish.
Pipsqueak tip Head over for Sunday lunch – a magnet for food bloggerati and families with young children. It’s a belter, comprising a sharing roast of chicken, lamb shoulder or beef forerib with all the trimmings.
